City Council 1

Zanesville City Council voted to return federal grant money.

An ordinance passed stating the City of Zanesville will have to the grant given to the fire department. The grant was issued in 2005 for approximately $100,000 to be used towards various equipment - specifically a diesel exhaust system. Officials discovered the specified items were never purchased. The city will now have to repay nearly half of the amount.

"I apologize for the Fire Department grant that we have to send back but it is one of many, many," expressed Zanesville Mayor Butch Zwelling.

According to Mayor Zwelling the city has received more than $8-million in grants towards Public Service projects as well as more than a million towards Community Development. One of which has recently been approved for the Seacrest Auditorium.

"Almost 10 million dollars in grants for little old Zanesville, Ohio in the last year and a half," said Zwelling.

In other council news....The ordinance that would contract Licking County's Building Department to handle some of Zanesville's building inspection services was defeated- after City Code Enforcement Officer Tim Smith asked to end negotiations until the county replaces current Building Department Administrator Jim Waymer, who is set to retire later this month.
