Man Flees from Authorities During Drug Buy

Drug Bust 2

A man is currently behind bars facing drug charges after authorities said he fled during a drug-buy.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said this past Thursday 30 year-old Jerome Johnson of Zanesville- more commonly known as "J-Roc" - unknowingly sold one ounce of crack cocaine to an undercover officer. When authorities attempted to stop the suspect he fled and a pursuit began.

"We think he threw out some contraband, some other drugs out of the car during the pursuit and tried to throw some U.S currency into the river," said Lutz.

The pursuit began on Pine Street and ended near the 6th Street Bridge and Muskingum Avenue when the suspect stopped the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Lutz believes the suspect may have considered jumping into the river but ultimately gave-up and was apprehended.

"To be able to get him off the streets is a huge success for our community and hopefully it effects several people that won't be able to get dope from him," said Lutz.

The drug investigation was a combined effort of the Muskingum County Sheriffs Office and the Zanesville Police Department Drug Units. According to Lutz, Johnson has been charged with one count of trafficking crack cocaine, one count of fleeing and eluding and one count of tampering with evidence. He could face up to 20 years if convicted.
