The east coast is facing another natural disaster - Hurricane Irene is heading for North Carolina, and the Red Cross is getting ready to provide relief.

Director of Health and Safety for the Muskingum Valley Chapter of the Red Cross Julie Davis said the organization isn't wasting any time.

"We don't wait until disaster hits," said Davis.  "We have warehouses across the country filled with stuff ready to go."

Davis said one of Muskingum Valley's volunteers has been called to the scene to organize shelters.  She said the Red Cross could ask for more volunteers from our area if the damage is severe enough.

"What we need to worry about in this area, because we're in a flood-prone area, is if a hurricane gets really bad there, we're going to get all that rain," said Davis.  "When you get a lot of rain, you get a lot of flooding, so we may be having some of our own problems here."

Officials said Hurricane Irene has been upgraded to a Category 3 storm, and evacuations are underway in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina.
