It was a busy Labor Day weekend for local law enforcement.

Sergeant Clark Felix from the Zanesville Post of the Highway Patrol said there weren't many accidents, but the number of stops and arrests were high.

"As far as the traffic goes, not many crashes, but we did make over 560 arrests, over 100 safety belt citations and over 900 traffic stops," said Felix.

Felix said there were 12 OVI arrests, and two of those were felonies.  He said that although there was a lot of activity over the holiday, the statistics were similar to last year's Labor Day weekend.

"I think with the fuel prices, there aren't as many travelers out as there used to be, but those that were out, they were in a hurry," said Felix.

Felix said the Ohio Department of Transportation planned the construction on Maple Avenue around Labor Day.

"I'm really glad, because around the holiday season, it gets really congested out there, and we do have a lot of minor accidents on Maple Avenue," said Felix.

The Zanesville Post of the Highway Patrol reported approximately a dozen accidents in Muskingum County over the weekend.
