A section of Main Street in Downtown Zanesville was closed off Sunday afternoon as hundreds came to gather and remember the September 11th attacks.

For the second year the community has come together in front of the Muskingum County Court House to show gratitude for their freedom and right to assemble in prayer.

"We believe this nation needs prayer and we need to remember those wonderful firefighters and police officers and EMTs and everybody that everyday has put their lives on the line for us," said Event Coordinator Amy Moore. "So we're here to pray and to honor them."

The prayer service was apart of a nationwide alliance calling citizens and communities to come together and honor their country.  Moore took the necessary steps to have the plan approved by the county commissioners. She then set forth asking local organizations to be apart of the remembrance, and was shocked by the number who proudly volunteered.

"Its because I think for us, as United States citizens, this was the first time, other than pearl harbor, we were attacked on our soil," said Moore. "It has touched so many lives of people because we lost so many people from that day ."

Just down the street from the Court House, at the Zanesville Fire Department, our men and women first responders were honored with an unveiling of a monument in memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

"It has been 10 years since the terrorist attacks and a lot of people were involved the safety workers in New York, the pentagon, and in Pennsylvania, plus all the innocent citizens in the airplanes and towers and everywhere," said Zanesville Fire Chief Craig Stemm.

The monument will stand in front of the Zanesville Fire Department . The engraved scripture reads, "Dedicated to those we lost and those who carry on."
