Coming from North Carolina, one woman's story is making it's way back home to Zanesville.

Karen Fawcett Kelly is a 1988 graduate of West Muskingum who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease in August of 2010. Karen and her husband live in North Carolina with their 9-year-old daughter Sophie. To help raise money to defeat the disease, Vista Golf Course will be hosting their first "Carin' for Karen" Golf Outing this Saturday.

"A group of Karen's friends that all graduated from high school with her have decided to put this outing together to support Karen and her family," said Vista Golf Course Manager Ryan Schmidt.

Karen is no longer able to use steps but can still walk some with the assistance of a walker. She is also in a small group of people whom are participating in a drug trial for a new medication which is hoped to slow progression of the disease. Vista Golf Course Manager Ryan Schmidt says the community's support is vital.

"For this cause, I think it's important because it will bring awareness to the disease. All of Karen's friends are really getting behind her and they want to do something good and I think this is going to end up being a really nice thing for her," said Schmidt.

Proceeds from the event will be used to help the Kelly family with medical expenses and a portion with go to the ALS Association to aid in research.

Registration for the Golf Outing is at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday and there is a Shot Gun Start at 8:00 a.m.  The cost is 55 dollars per person.
