The battle against cancer is all too familiar for one Perry County family who gathered Saturday to continue the fight.
Within only 30 years, the Dodson family has lost 17 family members in the fight against cancer. Saturday the family gathered with the community to hold the 5th Annual "Kat" Dodson Foundation Fundraiser. Co-Organizer Cheryl Dodson is just one of nine siblings who remembers her sister who lost the battle.
"She was a giving person, she didn't care who it was, what the need was, she'd see somebody along the road holding a sign, she'd stop, it didn't matter," explained Dodson. "Most of us would just drive by, that was Kat, she was married to a Vietnam veteran who we actually just lost to cancer too."
Passing away only 63 days after receiving her diagnosis, Kat never saw the families first fundraiser- which has grown to raise more than $90,000 in the past 4 years, with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit the Perry County Cancer Alliance.
"If someone calls us and we get documentation from them, no matter what kind of cancer they have, we'll give them a check right off the get go," said Dodson. "I mean they can have that money to do with what they want, we'll ease their burden to buy their kids school clothes, they can go out to dinner, we don't care what they do with it, we just want to help them in their time of need because we feel we have it better off than what they do and we know what they are struggling with."
Saturday's goal was to raise $25,000.
