The Muskingum County Branch of the NAACP held their 43rd Annual Freedom Fund banquet Saturday evening.

The banquet not only serves as a fundraiser for the Branch's operating expenses but also a time to give back to the community.

"We will be giving away three book donations to area students who have gone onto college to help with books and so forth. When you get to school, you have to have other things too and i'ts hard to get adjusted," said Branch President Kenneth Burke

Also at Saturday evening's banquet was the presentation of the "Footprints in the Sand" award which honors someone who has continuously given back and served the Zanesville community which went to James Mclaughlin.

"it knocks the wind out of your sails. I am very humbled by it. I expect it's because of my many years working in schools. I taught 31 years in Zanesville Schools but i've been a music director for 52 years in the churches so i've worked with the community for a long time," said Mclaughlin

Many city and county leaders along with other members of the county's NAACP branch attended the banquet.
