Muskingum County is recognizing three heroes who continue to serve their communities.
Donald and Larry Hindel from Frazeysburg and Howard Lavy Jr. from Zanesville were inducted into the Muskingum County Veterans Hall of Fame on Friday night. Lavy enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school in 1962 and served for 30 years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He and his wife now reside in Hawaii, and they traveled all the way back to Zanesville for the ceremony.
"I've kept my Ohio roots," said Lavy. "I don't forget where I came from, and this time of year is always very beautiful. It is a little bit chilly for us, but other than that, it's a pleasure to come back and see my family."
The inductees received plaques for their achievement, and their names will be displayed in Secrest Auditorium. Donald and Larry Hindel were not able to attend because of health reasons, but family members accepted awards on their behalf. Lavy said he's honored to be one of the 22 million veterans across the country.
"Service and sacrifice, and recognition particularly for those who lost their lives in service of our country," said Lavy.
The West Muskingum Concert Band and local performers entertained the crowd.
