Symphony Orchestra Performs Vivaldi's Gloria

Regional musicians are ringing in the holiday season with a special concert.

The Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra performed at Muskingum University on Sunday.  Violinist Mark Haven said the featured piece was Vivaldi's Gloria, but the show also included Christmas songs and multi-cultural music.

"This orchestra is a treasure for this community," said Haven.  "We're trying to get more people enthusiastic about orchestral music.  We just finished our Christmas concert in Zanesville, and we had about 1,500 people attend that."

Haven learned how to play the violin when he was eight years old, and now he's the Orchestra Director at Zanesville City Schools.  Haven said some of his students are apprentices in the symphony orchestra.

"I think it's a great way to have an outlet for creative expression, and that's very important in a dog-eat-dog world where you're going to work, you come home, and to be able to play music and express yourself, to enjoy coming together with other people, and music is a wonderful outlet," said Haven.

The symphony orchestra is a partnership between Muskingum University and the southeastern Ohio community.
