Update on Fatal Accident

Trooper Shawn Allar

One person is dead following a one vehicle crash in Guernsey County Friday afternoon.

It happened around 2 p.m. on Byesville road. Cambridge State Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Allar says a 30-year-old male drove off the right side of the road, overturned, struck a ditch, and hit several trees. The victim, who has not been identified yet, was not wearing a seatbelt, something Trooper Allar says could have drastically changed the circumstances.

"A big thing that could avoid a fatality in this crash is seatbelt use." said Trooper Allar. "As you can see by looking at the car, if he would have had a seatbelt on he would have suffered probably minor injuries, and could probably be standing here talking to us today."

Guernsey County Coroner Janet Brockwell pronounced the victim dead on the scene. Trooper Allar also warns that Byesville road, also known as County Road 35, is a curvy road, and you should always use caution when driving.

"On this road in particular, as you can see the road conditions are dry, watch your speed, you know it's a 55 mph speed limit on these roads, but still you have to drive the speed safer conditions." explained Allar.

According to Allar, speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Further details about the accident will be released after the Patrol finishes the investigation and notifies the victim's family.
