Grant to Pay for New ZFD Truck

A federal grant is helping the Zanesville Fire Department provide a better service to the community.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown announced on Thursday that the Zanesville Fire Department is receiving $676,013 for a new vehicle.  Zanesville Fire Chief Craig Stemm said the award is made possible by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grants program.

"We actually applied for two different grants," said Stemm.  "One was for safety equipment for the men including coats, hats and helmets.  The other one was for a new truck to replace our ladder truck, which is a 1987."

Stemm said although it's an older model, routine maintenance has kept the truck running for a quarter of a century.  He said the repair bills are starting to add up, and the fire department is required to meet newer safety standards, so the grant arrived at an ideal time.

"The city of Zanesville is like every other community right now, and money is short, so a $600,000 plus grant is quite a big help in these times," said Stemm.

Stemm said he's still waiting to hear back about the grant that would provide new gear for his firefighters.
