Big Brother, Little Brother

All it takes is a little effort to make a big difference in the life of a child.

On Saturday about 100 "bigs" and "littles" spent the afternoon at Blits Restaurant and Arcade in Zanesville.  They're part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, which helps children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships.

"My favorite part is being that sponsor, that mentor to someone that may not have one in his or her life, and I know that I'm making a difference in the community," said Matthew Gross.

Big Brothers Big Sisters holds an event like this one every month, but many of the "bigs" eat lunch with their "littles" as often as once a week.  Research has shown that children in the program are less likely to use alcohol and drugs and skip school.

"That's actually one of the reasons I got involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, because of the impact it has not just on the community, but on these young lives," said Vicki Maple.  "With events like this, it's just so important to bring these kids out to experience everything the community has to offer."

More than 80 local kids are still in need of a mentor.  For more information, call Big Brothers Big Sisters of Zanesville at (740) 453-7300.
