Seniors Learn to Prevent Fraud

It's National Consumer Protection Week and a local organization is participating...

The Center for Seniors in Muskingum County held a program Wednesday for residents, to educate them on fraud. Support Services Director Debi Smith said that seniors should be aware of how con artists work, and who they prey upon.

"They're targeted because of their age, targeted because they're homebound. There's websites that people may get on for individuals that have a disability, and then, you know, do a chatroom with a friend or something, and then that friend turns out not to be a friend," said Smith.

Representatives from the Attorney General's office had tips and tricks on ways to prevent being scammed. Smith said that even in our community, it is a common occurrence.

"The sheriff's department is speaking about some local information that happens to people in our area. There's handouts here for seniors, and many ways that they can find out about what they should be looking for."

The Center for Seniors has additional information for those who missed Wednesday's program.
