Reaching Out to Witnesses of Fatal Accident

The Ohio Highway Patrol is still looking for witnesses of a fatal accident last month.

It happened on February 20th just north of McGlade School Road on State Route 60.  Trooper Jeff Fowler said a motorcycle and a pick-up truck hauling a trailer were traveling northbound.  When the pick-up slowed down to make a left turn into a private driveway, the motorcycle attempted to pass the truck, and they collided.

A passenger on the motorcycle, 20-year-old Luka Smith of Zanesville, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver, 20-year-old Zachary Tigner of Zanesville, was flown to OSU Medical Center with serious injuries.  Fowler said the patrol was able to talk to a few witnesses at the scene.

"One of the witnesses, she was maybe three cars back, said she was passed by the motorcycle back around the Vista View area," said Fowler.  "She said that there were cars in between her and the truck, and when she got on scene, those vehicles were stopped, but she said within a minute or so, they left."

Fowler said he hopes those other witnesses will come forward and provide the patrol with additional details.

"We have good witnesses, but anything extra we can get, we try to exhaust all possibilities in the investigation," said Fowler.  "Anything that we're missing, we definitely want it on the report."

The crash remains under investigation.  Anyone with information is urged to call the Ohio Highway Patrol at (740) 453-0541.
