Muskingum County is applying for a grant that could help tear down abandoned and vacant homes.
On Thursday Community Development Director Sheila Samson provided the commissioners with an update on the grant.
"The county and city combined have a lot of those properties," said Samson. "This will just help us to alleviate some of the criminal acts going on at those properties, and it will assist with increasing property values in those neighborhoods again."
The grant is part of the $75 million Ohio received after the federal government announced in February a $25 billion settlement with five banks involved in foreclosure fraud nationwide.
"We will have 60 days to complete an application to submit to the attorney general's office," said Samson. "They will review those applications and see exactly how we anticipate to spend those dollars."
Samson said allocations for individual counties have yet to be determined.
