Opening Day of the Downtown Farmers Market

Local farmers and vendors took to the Zanesville Muskingum County Welcome Center Wednesday afternoon, for the first downtown farmers market of the year.

President of the market, Mark Barnhart says while the prices may not be cheaper than the grocery store, the quality is better, and some of the options available may be a pleasant surprise.

"Most of the stuff here, I tell people, is 2000 miles fresher, which means it's several days fresher" said Barnhart "Everything here is from Ohio, we only allow vendors from Muskingum or an adjacent county to come. We don't allow Florida produce or items like that in."

Barnhart says with the lack of precipitation so far this year, crops are in desperate need of rain, which could become a hassle for farmers.

"Even the wild raspberries, there is a lot of them, but there is no size to them, so we'll have to start irrigating and that adds an expense to us." explained Barnhart.

Barnhart says the market normally starts out slow each year, but picks up as more fruits and vegetables are ready for harvest. The downtown farmers market takes place every Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Zanesville Muskingum County Welcome Center. Farmers or vendors who are interested in setting up at the farmers market should call 740-796-6935.
