Kids Farm Safety Day

Kids are learning what to do in case of an outdoor emergency this summer.

The Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District hosted Kids Farm Safety Day at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds.  District Technician Kylene Newman said campers were grouped with counselors as they rotated through different stations.

"It's just for kids to be educated on safety in the outdoors between ATV safety, livestock handling safety, tractor safety and water safety," said Newman.  "We have EMTs here to teach what to do in the event of an accident."

One of the demonstrations showed children why it's so important to wear a helmet.  An instructor strapped a cantaloupe into a helmet and tossed it off the back of a pick-up truck.  Newman said the program also helps 4-H kids prepare for situations involving livestock.

"I was in 4-H when I was younger, and I attended an event like this at the fairgrounds," said Newman.  "We've never had an event like this since then, and I thought it was something good for the community."

About 60 kids participated in the event.
