One local teacher will be recognized by the President of the United States later this month.

Tami Fitzgerald, a science teacher at West Muskingum High School for the past thirty years has been selected to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in science. After being nominated by Principal Ray Peyton, Fitzgerald had her work cut out for her.

"I had to video tape me teaching a class, I had to submit lesson plans, student work samples, had to do discussion, pick a major theme in science that I taught with and talk about different aspects of it," said Fitzgerald.

Winners of this award receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation. Fitzgerald says her students were a big help and feels they get to share the award as well. She is excited to head to Washington D.C. to take part in the awards ceremony and several days of educational and celebratory events.

"We go the last week of June and we'll be gone Tuesday through Saturday. during those three days there's award celebrations we stay at a hotel that's one block from the White House," said Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald will have the chance to meet with members of Congress and Administration to talk about policies on science education. She feels this award speaks well for the whole Muskingum County area especially West Muskingum and it's students.
