Railway System To Get New Addition

Muskingum County is looking to further establish its railway system at Eastpointe Park.

On Monday, the Port Authority made plans to add a third rail spur at the rail transfer station. There are also plans to create a "lay down" yard to store material when it is unloaded off a train.

"We're kind of looking at some of the joining acreage to see what we can do in terms of leveling some of it out to store materials. We're dealing with some topography issues and it's going to take some time to figure out how much usable ground we have," said Mike Jacoby, Port Authority Executive Director.

The Port Authority received a grant of just over $137,000 for the rail spur but there is prep work needed for some adjacent land. They have 15 to 20 acres that needs to be graded and a cost estimate for utilities established so it will be a shovel ready site.

"That's what we agreed today is do the preliminary engineering just to get an idea of how much that is going to cost, to do the grading, compaction and utilities extensions and then we'll decide later whether or not we're ready to pull the trigger on that," added Jacoby.

Jacoby says the initial engineering for the shovel ready site will be about $4,500 dollars. Jacoby also announced that an Oklahoma company bought 7.4 acres in the Eastpointe Industrial Park for $85,000. Tilley Pressure Testing is going to build an 11,000 square foot facility and create about ten jobs. The company provides pressure testing of pipe for fracking.
