A portion of Springfield Township will now be considered part of the Village of South Zanesville.
Muskingum County Commissioners approved 10.3 acres of the township to South Zanesville. The annexation will bring a community center and an apartment complex into the Village.
"Both Springfield Township and South Zanesville will benefit. Springfield Township will still get a good portion of some of the property tax along with South Zanesville with the building of the apartments. It's a win-win situation," said Chris Kerby, South Zanesville Fiscal Officer.
Kerby says the apartments will bring a lot of good looks to the old school yard where they will be built. The community center on 6th Street will also see improvements.
"They're up there working daily. They're really improving the looks of the area," said Kerby.
The plans of annexing the acreage have been in the works for a year now. Kerby says there will be no cost to South Zanesville. He believes they will break even or possibly make a little off of the annexation.
