Programs To Help Farmers In Need

It's been a rough summer for farmers, but help is finally here.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved the Muskingum Morgan Farm Service Agency for two programs.  County Executive Director Bill Huston said funds are available for drought and wind damage.

"You need to have suffered at least $1,000 of loss," said Huston.  "In the drought situation that would be if the water supply that we're going to develop will cost you more than $1,000 then you would be eligible."

Huston said farmers are not able to begin repairs until they're approved for the drought program, but wind damage can be fixed in advance.  He said these issues caused by mother nature will impact the non-farming community as well.

"If we run out of water, that forces farmers to either haul water, which is time consuming and expensive, or we're probably going to sell more of our cattle, and in the long run, that affects all of us as consumers," said Huston.

Farmers can apply for both programs from August 20th through September 20th at the Muskingum Morgan Farm Service Agency on Underwood Street in Zanesville.
