Four Arrested for OVI Outside of Checkpoint

Law enforcement officials are calling last week's OVI Checkpoint in Zanesville a success.

It took place Friday evening on Pershing road in Springfield township.

Zanesville Police Captain Tony Coury said the collaborative operation with state and county law enforcement yielded some interesting results both in and around the checkpoint.

"Only one person had any sign of alcohol use inside the checkpoint," said Coury.  "He was checked and he did not test over the legal limit so he was allowed to leave."

Outside of the checkpoint, Coury said four people were arrested and charged with OVI and nearly twenty others were cited for violations ranging from seatbelts to driving under suspension.

"It's not about getting all the OVI arrests it's about bringing awareness to the community that drinking and driving is against the law, and we're trying to stop that and get people to use designated drivers," added Coury.

Coury said the check point serves as a reminder to community about the consequences of drinking and driving.

Coury said he hopes to conduct other checkpoints in the city in the near future.
