The State Highway Patrol said a man could be in serious trouble after crashing an overdue rental car under the influence of alcohol.
Trooper Max Rentz said it happened around 4 p.m. on State Route 16 near the 586 exit. A Toyota Avalon was traveling westbound at the time of the accident.
"The driver of the vehicle ran off into the median first, as you can tell from the skid marks behind us, overcorrected, went off the right side of the road, down the embankment and ended up next to that fence," said Rentz.
The male driver was the only person involved in the crash. He was taken to Licking Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. Rentz said the vehicle belongs to Enterprise Rent-A-Car and was supposed to be returned by now.
"There was a lot of empty beer cans in the vehicle and I was told by the other trooper that he was intoxicated, so I would imagine that's your cause," said Rentz.
The patrol did not release the name of the driver, but he could face charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, losing control and unauthorized use.
