"Tis the season for stores to start hiring for the holidays.
A survey of fourteen major US Retailers, by consulting firm Hay Group, said 57 percent will hire about the same as last year. Wal-mart, Toys 'R Us and Kohl's are among stores looking to hire more seasonal workers than last year. Job Developer Judy Metzger said that one reason for the increase could be due to online shopping.
"A lot of people during the Christmas season do the ship to store," explained Metzger. "It saves them on shipping costs that can be expensive. They actually have to have a lot of people in the store to be able to handle that merchandise as it comes in so they'll be hiring extra people for that."
Metzger said the key to finding a holiday job is to start applying now.
"They need to get out there early because they're hiring really for seasonal positions now," said Metzger. "Don't wait until Thanksgiving or into November. You want to get out there now."
Kohl's plans to hire 52,000 seasonal workers up ten percent from last year, while Wal-mart said they'll add an additional 50,000 seasonal workers.
