The Genesis Healthcare System has reason to celebrate.
The Trauma Center is marking its one year anniversary as a level three center. Since 2010 when the center received status as a trauma center to June of 2011 over 1,500 patients were seen and over 1,200 avoided transfer to another hospital.
"It's saved the community as well as the patients over $20,000,000 in air transport costs and $2,000,000 in ground transport costs," said Dr. Stuart Chow director of trauma at Genesis Healthcare.
Not only is there savings for patients in monetary costs, being able to stay in Zanesville is better for the patients' health.
"It saves them time of having to drive to Columbus where they might not be familiar with the roads, it translates to spending time with their loved ones more and it also saves in the communication sometimes is a little easier to obtain when they're closer to their family," said Dr. Chow.
Dr. Chow said the Trauma Center will continue to work toward becoming a level two trauma center and improve patient care.
