A Norwich man passed away following a two vehicle accident Wednesday night.

The State Highway Patrol said it's investigating the accident that took place around 10:30p.m. on US 22 at Sundale Road in Union Township, Muskingum County.

Troopers said 21-year-old Ethan West of Norwich was driving north on Sundale in a Jeep Grand Cherokee and failed to yield at a stop sign and drove into the path of 44-year-old Thomas Smith of Zanesville.

Smith was driving east on US 22 in a 1995 Ford Explorer. He was taken to Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital and was treated for minor injuries and released.

West was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated by New Concord and Perry Township Fire Departments. He was also taken to Genesis Good Samaritan where he passed away from extensive internal injuries.

Troopers said neither driver was wearing a safety belt and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
