23rd Annual Handbell Festival

The 23rd annual Zanesville Handbell Festival was held at Grace United Methodist Church Sunday evening.

Five local handbell choirs took part in the event to help ring in the holiday season as a community.

"Many church groups, whether they be choirs or handbell choirs or instrumental groups, are kind of islands of their own." said Grace United Methodist Music Minister Jim Mayercak. "We can put them all together for a situation like this for public entertainment as well as glorification of the body of Christ."

Hundreds of people turned out for the annual event. Five pieces were performed by the groups combined, and each church performed two pieces individually.

"This is a tradition here in Zanesville, and it's a great tradition that we want to keep going on, and on, and on." Mayercak said. "Handbell choirs have been around for a long time and this is a way for people to express themselves instrumentally with a rather unique instrument."

The handbell concert has become a way to kick off the holiday season since the festival occurs the Sunday before Thanksgiving every year.
