Those that practice the Christian faith the Christmas season is a special time of the year.
Dr. Herbert Hicks is a pastor at Zion Reformed Church in Thornville. He said Christmas is important because Jesus came to us a baby so that we might become a part of God. He said the season also reminds us of God's love and grace. There are many ways to celebrate the season.
"One way to celebrate Christmas is not learning the art of giving, but learning an even more difficult art of receiving," said Dr. Hicks. "Sometimes it's harder to receive a gift then it is to give it and truly celebrating Christmas is learning how to receive God's gift of Jesus."
Christians begin their calendar year with the four weeks leading up to Christmas known as Advent. The season is a time of preparation and for some a time to celebrate with a family and faith.
"I am as spiritual being created in the image of God. I need to celebrate my spirituality and the church gives us a family of faith where we can be supported and we can grow, where we at once a week can stop and turn our hearts toward heaven and thank God for all of the blessings God has given us."
Dr. Hicks said the Christmas while joyful for many is a sad time for others, so it's good to reach out to those that may need encouragement during this season.
