The annual American Red Cross holiday blood drive was held Thursday at Secrest Auditorium. Event organizers were pleased with the turnout as Thursday's drive was set to collect ninety units of blood and they expected to reach that goal.
"Zanesville always does well. This drive has grown over the last few years, it started out about three years ago and we collected 35 units and now we're going to 90 for the holiday season," said Rick Dayton of American Red Cross Blood Donor Services.
This blood drive is one of the biggest for Muskingum County. It is also extremely important to the red cross, especially during this time of year.
"It helps us quite a bit because we don't collect blood on the holidays when it comes to Christmas and everything is shut down as well as New Year's Day and some other holidays so whenever we get around a holiday we miss a day where we can't collect blood we have to kind of makeup for that so to have a big drive right around the holidays really helps us a lot," said Dayton.
