Bridge Plans

The Muskingum County Engineer met with County Commissioners today to discuss plans and funding for a local bridge.

The Grant Cliff Bridge, located near Prophet's Park is due for repairs and a relocation by 2014

Muskingum County Engineer, Doug Davis explained, "Years ago, the old state route 555 was relocated and being within legislation, state routes have to connect and that is the missing piece. So there was an agreement signed years ago, from the commissioners to the state from the state back to the commissioners to basically state that the county is responsible for the funding and maintenance of that structure "

The cost of the bridge is estimate at 4.12 millions dollars and the state is asking for the county to come up with close to $950,000 for their local match. In today's meeting, Davis was asking the commissioners how to proceed.

"I came to the commissioners in September to talk to them about this issue, that this was coming up and that we need to be thinking about replacing the structure. We have it on the agenda, we were able to acquire some federal funds for this bridge but that does require us a local match. "

The majority of funds for the County Engineer's office come from taxes on gasoline and license plate fees. The bridge is still considered safe but the office is constantly monitoring the bridge to determine the deterioration of the steel as negotiations continue.
