Tax season is here, and the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties is helping people keep more money in their pockets.
Today volunteers hosted a free tax preparation clinic at the Zanesville Metropolitan Housing Authority. Coordinator Katie Law said it's important to avoid paying high preparation fees, steer clear of refund anticipation loans and claim the Earned Income Tax Credit.
"When we go into the Ohio Benefit Bank software, based on the income that they're receiving, it will tell them what credits they're eligible to receive," said Law.
Law said the United Way has set a goal to prepare 300 to 400 tax returns this year. Her advice is to start early and stay organized.
"They need to bring a photo ID and a Social Security Card," said Law. "If they are filing for dependents, their Social Security Cards would need to be there as well. If they are filing jointly, their spouse needs to be at the appointment. Bring last year's tax documents and then this year's forms that they are going to file."
Anyone interested in attending a free clinic can call 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment.
