Young girls from around the area were able to shop for a free dress for their upcoming prom at the 5th annual "Once Upon a Prom" dress giveaway. The event was held at the Muskingum County Welcome Center and was sponsored by the East Side Community Ministry. There were over 600 dresses to choose from, all of which were donated by members of the community and by Jillian's. Over 100 girls took home free dresses today and also received complimentary dry cleaning from Olde Towne Cleaners.
"This is the fifth year we've done this, we did this for a couple years at our east side facility, which is quite small, and we could not contain the dresses and the girls there. We didn't have enough room so we came over here to the welcome center. They were gracious enough to invite us," said Sally Goins of the Eastside Community Ministry.
There were 11 dressing rooms set up at the welcome center along with 50 volunteers that that helped the girls try dresses on. If you weren't able to attend the "Once Upon a Prom" event, there's still time to get a free dress! You can stop by the Eastside Community Ministry on Stillwell Street to pick out your perfect prom dress.
"I had one mother today tell me without this event, our daughter would never have been able to go and feel good at her prom. And so I think it's real important. You get girls who are trying to pay for graduation, get ready for college, all that sort of thing, this is one big expense that we can help them with."
