Fatal Crash Involving A School Bus And Truck

Fatal bus accident

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that happened around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday in Licking County.

According to OSHP, Christopher M. Barthelmas, 31, of Hebron, Ohio was driving a Dodge pickup truck westbound on Interstate 70 when his truck ran out of gas, Barthelmas and Rodney Matthews, 15, a passenger in the truck,  got out of the vehicle and pushed it to the right lane on the interstate and were struck from behind by a school bus traveling westbound on Interstate 70.

Barthelmas died at the scene of the accident and Matthews was transported to The Children's Hospital in Columbus. The school bus was driven by Terry Elzey, 50, of Columbus, Ohio  who had minor injuries. There were no other passengers in the school bus and officials say that alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the fatal crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
