'The Sports Barber' Inducted into Ohio Military Hall of Fame

A local Afghanistan War Veteran is being inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for his heroic actions in the Middle East.

Sergeant Mike Debolt, was awarded The Silver Star, a top honor given for bravery, and The Purple Heart, for third degree burns he sustained on September 4th, 2008. A fateful day, when the Humvee he was riding in, drove over two anti-tank mines and exploded.

"Well the guys that were trapped inside and I was actually on fire myself,” said Debolt. “I just put myself out of flames, and kept going back in, and pulling some guys out. And we had a coordinated enemy attack, 360 degrees around us shooting at as, and pulling those guys out while we were under fire, That's basically why I got it."

Debolt will be inducted this Friday to the Hall of Fame for this bravery and the injuries he suffered in action. Yet he remains incredibly humble and is not used to this kind of attention

"It's kind of, I don't know. It's kind of weird, I am not used to this kind of recognition, I kind of live a simple life, I think the heroes that day were my guys that fought off the enemy too, while we were trying to save each other, so it was a coordinated effort. "

There were five men in the Humvee, all of whom were seriously injured, and one was tragically killed. Debolt voluntarily returned to service in 2011, but now lives a quiet life in Zanesville, working at The Sports Barber on Linden Avenue.
