Family Fun Day At The Shelter

The Animal Shelter in Muskingum County invites families for a fun day out.

At the event Saturday, families can take part in a scavenger hunt, Chinese raffle, make crafts and see a demonstration by the Muskingum County Sheriff's Office K-9s. They can also check out some of the animals up for adoption.

"Over the last several years we've managed anywhere from 4 to 5,000 animals a year that come through our doors and are adopted," said Executive Director Jody Murray. "We just want to educate the public about us being here and the services we provide. We use a lot of volunteers. We don't expect everyone to come out and adopt a pet, but if you want some exercise and like cats and dogs come out."

The family fun day also is a chance to explore the changes taking place at the shelter. They've painted and expanded some cages for their cats.

"We feel that it's going to be a more healthier situation for them," explained Murray. "When cats come into the shelter they're typically kind of stressed out and are prone to getting sick and those kinds of things. We're hoping by giving them more space that they are healthier, happier and make their adoptions happen quicker."

The family fun day Saturday is from 10am-2:30 p.m. with the K-9 demonstration at noon.

The Animal Shelter is located at 1430 Newark Road in Zanesville.
