School Report Cards Are Out

The new grading system replaces the former grading scale which gave schools written grades. The schools are now given letter grades different categories including achievement, progress, gap closing, graduation rate, literacy and preparedness. According to the Ohio Department of Education's website, the Zanesville City School District received an "F" in the standards met category, a "D" in value-added and an "F" in gap-closing. Linda Phillips, the director of curriculum and instruction for the district says she was surprised by some of the results.

"Over the summer, we gradually start seeing these results," said Phillips. "But the ones that we hadn't seen until yesterday were the value-added. So we knew about the achievement, the gap-closing and the graduation rate. We had not seen the value-added. And that one, we were disappointed in. We expected the overall value added to be better."

Phillips says the school system will continue their 5-step process to improve next year's results. She says teachers will work together, gather student data, plan instruction and look at what changes need to be made to meet every student's needs. The district didn't get all bad grades; they received an average rating of a "C" in performance index and a "B" in graduation rates.

"We believe our students are learning. We have students who go to the top colleges in the country. We have students who go through our system with a great deal of success. But obviously, there is a group, our groups that we are not making successes with that we should. And that's what we need to focus on."

Phillips says the district is also adding seven literacy coaches for the next school year in grades K-8. You can check your district's grade here: http://reportcard.education.ohio.gov/Pages/District-Search.aspx
