In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Genesis Hospital wants to talk to the public about the disease.

Breast cancer is curable. It can be treated in various ways especially of it is detected early. Specialist say that women should check for abnormalities in the breast once a month while they are in the shower.

"If you feel a lump if you notice any pain or tenderness in the breast any redness in the skin or pimples on the skin those are all things that should makes you worry that something maybe going on," said Genesis Radiation and Oncology Medical Director, Shalini Garg Gupta.

There are various treatments for the disease including hormonal treatments, surgery and radiation. There is also a new technique that doctors are using at Genesis called intensity modulated radiation treatment or IMRT for short.

"It's a way for us to really conform our radiation treatment to just treat the areas that we want and not treat the areas that we don't want. What this means for our patients or for your loved one that is a patient, is that we can minimize dose of radiation that goes to the lung, the heart and other normal structures that surround the breast tissue, " said Gupta.

To screen for breast cancer doctors suggest getting a mammogram done every one to two years after the age of 40.
