A chain reaction accident on Linden Avenue, caused five cars to collide, sending one person to the hospital and closing a portion of the road for a short time Wednesday afternoon.
Zanesville Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene around 3:30 in front of Terry's Tavern and say a silver Ford truck was traveling south on Linden when it struck a red Geo Tracker. The Tracker then smashed into a gold Saturn. The pile-up continued for two more cars. ZFD Assistant Fire Chief Marty Mercer says the Tracker was leaking gas onto the roadway.
"The driver had just filled up the gas tank, so we had a pretty decent amount of gasoline on the ground here that we had to take care of,” Mercer said. “The first thing we have to do, is stop it from flowing anywhere toward the waterway or anything like that, so we did that and we just used kitty litter to pick it up, it was a small enough amount we didn't have to call EPA or anything like that."
Mercer says the driver of the Saturn had minor injuries and was transported to Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital by Community Ambulance. The wreck blocked the railroad tracks, so trains had to be stopped while crews cleared the scene. ZPD Patrolman, Joel Tignor says the driver of the ford truck was cited for assured clear distance. No names have been released at this time.
