Traffic on I-70 is currently backed up in the westbound lane following a four vehicle accident near the Airport Rd./ Sonora Rd. exit.
The accident occurred just after 5 p.m. Thursday evening. Sgt. Chuck Merryman of the State Highway Patrol says the accident involved three compact vehicles and a small SUV that were all heading westbound on I-70.
"It appears that one of the vehicles may have slowed down at this point for an unknown reason and was struck in the rear by the vehicle behind it. And before they came to a stop, two other vehicles also became involved, also heading westbound," explained Sgt. Merryman.
Sgt. Merryman says seven people were taken to the hospital via Genesis Community Ambulance. All sustained injuries but Merryman says they appeared to be non-life threatening. He also mentioned that all of the drivers might not be from this area.
"At this point, we haven't located any witnesses that stayed at the scene. So we will have to individually talk to each driver to sort out exactly what happened."
The Ohio Department of Transportation is on the scene diverting traffic. The accident remains under investigation.
