Plans For Good Shepherd Memorial Near John Glenn HS

Following a complaint by a John Glenn High School student about a memorial depicting Jesus herding his flock, the American Civil Liberties Union asked the East Muskingum School District to remove the picture, which was donated to the school in remembrance of a teacher who passed away. Jeanette Moll, a Zanesville lawyer and a member of the community making the memorial possible, says plans for the statue are still in the early stages.

"We've got a group of people who are definitely interested. We've talked to Alan Cottrill about doing the statue," Holl explained. "We've talked to my church, which is Cornerstone Gospel. They've agreed to take donations that are designated to the Good Shepherd Memorial."

Moll says the memorial is not a protest to the removal of the painting, but is instead about leaving a lasting legacy and a memorial to the faith in the community. But as an attorney, Moll says there were constitutional issues with the painting being taken down.

"We live in a constitutional republic and the constitution does not contain separation of church and state, we are actually supposed to have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. And judges are supposed to be interpreting laws, not legislating from the bench."

There will be a community meeting at the Church of Christ in New Concord on December 8 at 2 o'clock to discuss where the statue will be placed and to put together a fundraising committee. The statue is expected to cost around $30,000. If you would like to make a donation for the statue, Mall says donations can be sent to the Cornerstone Full Gospel Church in Duncan Falls.
