Handel's Messiah to be Performed Locally

The Zanesville Civic Chorus and Orchestra will present the 84th annual performance of "Messiah" Sunday evening.

Performers met at Central Trinity United Methodist Church on 7th street to rehearse for the big day on Saturday. More than 120 performers including soloists, chorus and orchestra members will entertain the crowd on Sunday night. Director, James McLaughlin says it's a show you do not want to miss.

"First of all it's the most known piece of choral orchestra music in the world, if you go into a communist country they will perform Handel's Messiah. They do not look at it as a spiritual event they'll look at it as a classical concert, but its known all over the world, " said McLaughlin.

McLaughlin also says the performance is embedded in the holiday tradition here in Zanesville and features a wide variety of local talent.

"We have many high school students that are in this group including Licking Valley, Zanesville, Tri-Valley, John Glen, Philo all those schools systems are a part of this, also there's a lot of youth in the group and I think it offers something for everyone," said McLaughlin.

The concert starts promptly at 6 p.m. at the church and is open and free to the public. However a freewill offering will be collected during the program and be given to Christ's Table.
