Expect Traffic Delays As SZ Firefighter Dick Guss Is Laid To Rest

Drivers can expect long delays on Maple Avenue and throughout Zanesville on Thursday afternoon during the funeral procession of fallen firefighter and South Zanesville Mayor, Dick Guss.

Guss' family and friends are asking for the publics patience and respect as the late local hero is laid to rest. Guss' longtime friend, Bo Keck, says due to the fact that Guss was a firefighter and died in the line of duty, he's anticipating a lot of fire departments from across Ohio and West Virginia to attend the funeral, which will be held at Rolling Plains United Methodist Church in South Zanesville at 1 p.m. Following the service, at around 2 p.m., Keck says the procession will take Maysville Pike to E. Main Street to the South Zanesville Fire Department.

"Then we're gonna go across Pembroke to June Parkway to 719 and from 719 up Moxahala Avenue to 6th Street," Keck explained of the processional route. "The city's worked with us to get 6th Street open for the procession, we're gonna go up 6th Street, get on the interstate and then exit right away onto Maple Avenue and then go straight up Maple Avenue to Military, to the cemetery."

Keck expects the delays along the route to take anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes. If that route is part of your daily commute, you may want to consider taking an alternate route.

"Once we get out on Maysville Pike with everybody it's just kind of like it's gonna be a line. People need to be patient with us, and realize this is for a funeral. Just respect that and give us time to get through."

A fire fighter for 28 years, Guss died Sunday evening following injuries he sustained while working in the line of duty with the South Zanesville Fire Department.
