The State Fire Marshal's Office warns residents to stay safe during this round of winter weather.

The Fire Marshal reminds Ohioans that there is an increased risk for home fires when weather turns bad.

Marshal Larry Flowers said following basic tips can protect yourself and your family when the weather strikes.

For those using alternative heaters make sure to keep them at least three feet away from anything combustible. Heaters should have tip switches which will turn off the heater if they tip over. He also said not to use the oven range to heat your home and make sure wood stoves are properly installed.

The fire marshal also asks that those able should check on elderly neighbors and make sure you have a safety kit and working smoke detectors in your home.
