Vehicle Impersonating Law Enforcement In Muskingum County

traffic stop

A recent report into the Muskingum County Sheriffs Office is shedding light on the possibility of an unidentified vehicle impersonating a law enforcement vehicle in our area.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz informed WHIZ news that around 9:30 last Saturday evening a truck approached a woman from behind her car with a siren. A man on a PA system instructed her to pull over. A second vehicle then pulled up beside her and yelled for her not to pull over.

Sheriff Lutz said, "we don't really know if it was a game somebody was trying to play to get her to pull over. It was kinda odd that there were two vehicles involved."

If you feel you may be a victim of an unofficial traffic stop, DO NOT pull over. Slow down and call 9-1-1. The lights on the vehicle will also indicate if it is indeed a law enforcement vehicle.

"It is illegal for anyone to possess flashing blue lights. Flashing blue lights are for law enforcement purposes only," Sheriff Lutz stated. "If a red and white pulls over behind you when you stop, then the best option is for you to call 9-1-1 on your phone and report it to a dispatcher. If it is a law enforcement officer dispatch can confirm that there is an officer trying to pull somebody over."

This incident is still under investigation. If you have any information regarding this event or if this has happened to you, plese call Muskingum County Sheriffs Office at (740) 452-3637.
