The Zane State College Foundation celebrated 28 years of teeing off for scholarships this afternoon.

The 28th Annual Drive for Excellence Golf Outing took place at the Zanesville Country Club. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit students with significant financial needs, some of whom are first generation college students.

"Proceeds normally are around $1,000 dollars on average a scholarship per student," said Pamela Jira, an Executive Director at Zane State College. "We'll be able to award several just from players and their sponsors from today's event."

A luncheon preceded a golf clinic taught by PGA Pro Mike Durant. There was also a putting contest and awards ceremony. The community and the college came together to ensure bright futures for qualifying students.

"You know in Appalachia there's a lot of people who can't afford to go to college. And so fundraising events like this make it possible for them to attend," said Paul Brown, President of Zane State College. "We over the years have raised just though this one event over $2.5 million dollars for scholarships. That's a lot of students that normally wouldn't have been able to go to college so it not only helps them to get into college but it also helps them to get great jobs when they graduate."

Out of the the nearly 3,600 students at Zane State College, the Drive for Excellence Fundraiser helps those students who have the desire to go to college but may not have all the necessary funds to do so.
