Zanesville's Y-Bridge added some color this afternoon as volunteers from the Muskingum Valley Garden Society worked to plant flowers as part of the downtown beautification process.  The volunteers worked to fill 36 baskets on the bridge's poles that are equipped with an automatic watering system, and even more planting will be done throughout the downtown area later this week.

"We were at City Hall getting the flower beds ready to plant this Wednesday, and we'll be planting the Main Street on Wednesday night at 5:30 this week," said Darlene Turner, a volunteer coordinator with the Muskingum Valley Garden Society.  "Also, we'll be downtown on Saturday to do the new 5th Street project here from the interstate ramp clear down to the bridge."

Eighteen volunteers with the garden society are helping with the project which will see $10,000 worth of flowers planted throughout downtown.  The funding for the project comes mostly through donations as well as a spring symposium hosted by the society.

"We just want downtown to look nice, and I think it really does nice for the businesses," Turner said.  "It certainly makes the investment in downtown worthy, and there's a lot of interest here in revival for downtown. We hope this will ensure that this summer again."

Turner says they are always looking for ways to increase membership in the garden society, and if you would like to get involved, you can visit their website at mvgardensociety.org.
