RUN 4 GRANT

Over 500 walkers and runners made their way to Zanesville High School Saturday morning to honor the life of Grant Hickman.

Although the Zanesville student lost his life nearly three years ago, he lives on through a foundation created by his parents. With today's third annual Run 4 Grant 5K, they were able to raise around $20,000.

"The money that's raised goes into the Grant Hickman Foundation, and we divide that up with scholarships and for people with financial needs," said Beth Hickman, Grant's mother.  "We've sponsored 4-H where we've bought a hog last year at the fair, and we've sponsored four children to go to camp this year."

Fourteen area students received scholarships through the foundation this year. While Grant's parents say none of this would have been possible without the support of the community and corporate sponsors, there's still one other key factor in the 5K's success.

"The one main reason this has been a success though, is because of Grant and who he was, what he stood for," said Bret Hickman, Grant's father.  "The friends that he had at Zanesville, Tri-Valley, Rosecrans, just everywhere. He was just such a well liked kid."

Over $22,000 have been given in scholarships over the past two years. They hope to be able to give even more scholarships next year for what would have been Grant's senior class.
