The highway patrol is investigating a fatal accident that claimed the lives to two Guernsey county teenagers. Troopers say it happened around 5:30 this morning on Interstate 77 in Washington county. A standoff on interstate-71 has ended. Franklin county sheriff's detective Steve Martin says a former Columbus police officer who held dozens of state troopers at bay for several hours has been shot and wounded. Reports say a man was loaded into an ambulance after the shooting. A man was spotted jumping out of the S-U-V where he was holed up. The State Highway Patrol says its going to hold a sobriety checkpoint in our area this weekend. Lt. Barry Donley says the Zanesville Post is working with the Coshocton county sheriff's office to set up a checkpoint in Coshocton county on Saturday. Lt. Donley says officers will be conducting a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment. The exact location of the Coshocton county checkpoint will be announced Saturday morning.
The Perry County Sheriff's Department spent all of Thursday night looking for an escaped suspect, Jeremy McCord. WHIZ does know the search included the Junction City Area - however, it was called off Thursday night after search dogs could no longer locate a scent. One of the hardest adjustments for military personnel stationed in Afganistan is losing the comforts of home. To help make their service a little easier the American Red Cross plans to send candy, music, books, board games, and other items to help pass the time. Any donations can be dropped off at the Muskingum Valley American Red Cross on Thursdays from 9:00 to 3:00 p.m. starting on August 8.

On August 6, the McDonald's Resturant on Maysville Pike will offer a free immunization clinic for children of school ages from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Students requiring vaccinations should bring their immunization records to the clinic. As the new school year approaches, extra efforts are being made to ensure that all students have the supplies they need. Six companies requested information to bid for a chance to build the new roof for the Muskingum Country Jail, but in the end only three companies submitted bids. Saup Hartley, K & W Roof and Merriam Roof all submitted bids in the neighborhood of $90,000. Traditionally, the lowest bid is taken, but county commissioners say they will advise engineers and other city officials before making the final decision. The new roof is expected to cover the jail for the next 20 to 25 years.
