Helen Pierzchala, 90, of Zanesville and formerly of Hamtramck, MI, died early Monday morning, November 4, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Hamtramck on October 2, 1923, the daughter of Jozef and Katarzyna (née Blonska) Majewski.

A graduate of Hamtramck High School, Helen earned a bachelor’s degree in Polish from Wayne State University in the early 1990s. She moved to Zanesville in 1996, working at the Zanesville Fairfield Inn and Giacomo’s.

Helen greatly enjoyed talking with people, and she made countless friends throughout her life. Her vivacious spirit and quick wit left an impression on nearly everyone she met. She loved to share her numerous interests and causes with as many people as possible; chief among these was her love of Polonia, the worldwide Polish community. As a child of immigrants and a native of the Polish enclave of Hamtramck, Helen considered it a duty to promote Polish culture. She was known by many in the Zanesville area as “the Pączki Lady,” bringing Polish treats to area schools and businesses on Fat Tuesdays.

She is survived by her five children, Katherine (Thomas) Tabatowski, Henry Pierzchala, Christine Pierzchala, Theresa (Paul Vigeant) Pierzchala, and Eric (Cameron Bourquein) Pierzchala; eight grandchildren, Mary (Chad Leverenz) Tabatowski, Rebecca (Kirk Pinho) Pierzchala, Thomas (Thomas Way) Tabatowski, Stephen Tabatowski, Michael Tabatowski, Abby Tabatowski, Samuel Tabatowski, and Thea Rose Tabatowski; two great-grandchildren, Evelyn Pinho and Augustin Leverenz; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents and her husband Henry Pierzchala, she was preceded in death by brothers Stanley Walter Majewski and Arthur Majewski, and sisters Stephanie Wysocki and Baby Helen Majewski.

A memorial service at St. Florian Church in Hamtramck and a gathering of family and friends in Zanesville are planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to the charity of your choice.
